Vietnamese Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Ingredients : Serves 4

225 g Ground beef
225 g Ground pork
115 g Rice, cooked
225 g Onions, finely chopped
1 Egg, beaten
55 g Flour seasoned with salt and pepper
5 tablespoons Oil (for frying)
1/4 Salt
1/4 Pepper
   
Sauce  
55 g Onions, finely chopped
50 g Sugar
4 tablespoons Dry sherry
30 ml White vinegar
250 ml Beef broth
250 ml Pineapple juice
20 ml Tomato paste
55 g Pineapple, chopped
5 g Ginger, chopped
1 clove Garlic, chopped
1/4 Chili powder
1 tablespoon Arrowroot
   
Batter  
1 Egg
85 g All-purpose flour
100 ml Water

Preparation:

  • Fry onion until tender in oil, drain and add to combination of ground meats, 1 egg and cooked rice. Mix well.

  • Add salt and pepper to taste. Form mixture into small balls.

  • Mix batter ingredients. Gently toss balls in seasoned flour in a bag, dip in batter, fry until golden and drain. Reserve.

  • To make the sauce, fry onions until tender, add sherry, vinegar, sugar, broth and pineapple juice. Cook for 6 minutes.

  • Add tomato paste and boil for 4 more minutes.

  • Process the pineapple, ginger and garlic with a little water in a blender and add to the sauce with chili pepper powder. Add more if desired.

  • Blend the arrowroot with more water until smooth and add to sauce.

  • Stir until clear and thick, adding more water if too thick.

  • Add meatballs to sauce.

  • Heat through before serving.
